Woman sleeping peacefully through a toothache.

It’s been a very long day, and you’re finally home and ready to hit the hay. But as your head touches your pillow and you pull up the covers, you notice a throbbing pain in your mouth. It’s an unexpected toothache, and you wonder how you’re ever going to fall asleep now. Normally, you’d call your dentist and let them know—but it’s the middle of the night, you’re exhausted and impatient, and you need to get to bed. Here are some tips for sleeping peacefully, even with a nagging toothache.

What Causes Toothaches During the Nighttime?

There could be many reasons for getting toothaches at night. Sometimes this pain can be a dull, throbbing sensation; other times, it can cause extreme and sharp discomfort. No matter what the level of pain is, it should be addressed promptly. Some of the common causes for nighttime toothaches include food particles stuck between your teeth or gums, an increase in blood flow to the head due to lying down, and bruxism, which is when you grind your teeth during the night.

Tips For Sleeping with A Toothache

Your body needs sleep; it’s a crucial function that allows your brain to recharge and your cells to heal the damage from the previous day. You shouldn’t let toothaches prevent you from achieving the necessary amount of rest! Consider the following:

  • Avoid eating before bed – Try to refrain from eating sugary or acidic foods before bedtime, as they can intensify your toothache.
  • Practice good oral hygiene – Adhere to a comprehensive oral hygiene routine; brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and then floss.
  • Rinse your mouth – A hot saltwater solution can help to rinse your mouth of debris and clean any wounds or sites of infection. An antibacterial mouthwash can also be effective.
  • Keep your head elevated as you sleep – This can help to prevent the pressure caused by increased blood flow into the head and mouth and improve overall circulation.
  • Apply a cold compress – An ice pack can help to reduce inflammation at the site of the pain.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers – These can help to reduce your pain temporarily but are only meant to be a short-term solution until your dentist can treat you.

There are many reasons for toothaches during the nighttime; no matter what the cause is, you should visit your dentist as soon as possible for treatment. Until then, these tips can help you get a little bit of sleep in the meantime.
