The big day is finally here—after years of wearing them, it’s finally time to have your braces removed! This is an exciting milestone on your journey towards a healthy and beautiful smile, and you’re certain to be dazzled by how your teeth will look. That said, you might be a little unsure about what to expect during the braces removal process and beyond. Keep reading to learn more.
The Braces Removal Process
Even though it might not seem like it, braces are actually designed to come off rather easily. Your orthodontist has access to many handy tools that are designed to gently pop the brackets from your teeth with ease. These instruments work to locate the weak spots on your braces, so removal isn’t just quick—it’s painless (although you might feel some slight pressure, but nothing severe). After the wires and brackets have been removed, any remaining adhesive is buffed off your teeth. Overall, it’s much less complicated process than receiving them!
The Follow-Up Examination
Even though the removal process is quick, your orthodontist cannot send you on your way until they’ve checked your teeth and completed the following next steps, which include:
- Polishing your teeth.
- Taking final records and measurements.
- Taking final photos and X-rays.
- Designing your retainer.
- Providing you with after-care instructions and guidelines.
Life After Braces
It’s not uncommon for some patients to experience slightly swollen gums once their braces have been removed, but this usually dissipates within 48 hours. You might also experience some light bleeding when brushing, but this shouldn’t discourage you as brushing will help to reduce inflammation. Tooth sensitivity might also occur as you become accustomed to not having braces anymore.
Once your braces are off, you also aren’t entirely out of the woods yet—your orthodontist will fit you for your retainers, which you’ll need to wear every day moving forward. Since your teeth are still at a high risk of shifting immediately after having your braces removed, wearing your retainer frequently is crucial! However, your orthodontist will let you know when you can begin to change your retainer-wearing habits. Also be sure to never eat while wearing your retainers and take extra measures to keep them and the rest of your mouth as sanitary as possible.
After having your braces removed, your teeth will look and feel great—and you might be tempted to continually run your tongue across their newfound, smooth surface! That said, knowing what to expect when the big day arrives will only ensure that things go smoothly, and you’re left feeling fantastic about your new smile.
