Is It Possible to Prevent Invisalign Refinements?

When you make an investment in your smile with Invisalign, you want to get the very best results. Sometimes treatment will go completely according to plan, and a beautiful new look arrives right on schedule. But while typical Invisalign programs last approximately 12 to 18 months, sometimes teeth have other ideas. Occasionally, they will move slower than predicted, or the modifications made by aligners could cause unwanted movement that requires intervention. Fortunately, the orthodontist can get your smile back on track.

The Benefits of Having Straighter Teeth

Sure, a straight, even smile makes you look healthier and more youthful, but did you know that correcting a bad bite can have health benefits, too? Straightening your teeth can help protect them from uneven wear, reduce jaw strain, and even help you clean your teeth more effectively so you can better prevent cavities and gum disease.

How Complications in Invisalign Treatment Are Handled

If hiccups occur during your treatment, don’t despair! Invisalign refinements are the solution. Refinements are done with additional trays that most likely will add time to your treatment duration: however, they are very important in helping you achieve your ideal goals. Thankfully, in many cases, refinements will not add to the total cost of your Invisalign plan.

How to Reduce the Odds of Needing Refinements

While there’s no surefire way to know if you’ll need refinements, there are things you can do to help reduce your risk of requiring them.

  • Be sure to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day as prescribed by your orthodontist
  • Be sure to care for your teeth properly during your orthodontic treatment. Brush your teeth and floss after each time you eat.
  • Do not eat or drink anything but water while wearing Invisalign
  • Swap out your aligners as directed by your orthodontist
  • Attend all regular dental exams
  • Attend all regular orthodontic exams
  • Notify your orthodontist if you notice any lingering pain or if your aligner cracks, breaks, gets lost, or does not fit properly

While you may be eager to complete your orthodontic treatment as quickly as possible, patience is the key to getting the smile you deserve. So, relax, trust the process, and follow the above tips for success, and you’ll have an even, beautiful bite before you know it!
